Reminders of my Mom

I lost my Mom to cancer this past December. Odd as it may seem, every time I hear Ran, I think of my Mom. First off, the two shared the same birthday. But it goes way beyond that calendar connection. I see in Ran many of the same great traits that made my Mom the wonderful person that she was: Feisty, fiercely independent and, above all, a whole lotta fun. My Mom is the one who introduced me to country music. In her final years, it was something we could share. I can only imagine how amusing it would've been if Ran's songs had been out when I was growing up. I could just hear her making a joke by telling me to clean my room or else she'd put me on a "Greyhound Bound for Nowhere" or ordering me to get my butt to bed before she peppered it with "Gunpowder & Lead".

Also, my Mom, just like Ran, cared deeply for animals -- especially dogs. A few months before she died, her and my Dad came across a dog that someone had beaten and abandoned in a ditch. The way my Dad tells it, he couldn't get anywhere near the dog, but when my Mom opened her truck door, the dog ran over and jumped up on her lap. Clearly, she had a connection with animals. That's why shortly after her passing, I made a contribution in her name to the Humane Society of East Texas.

Then a few months ago my Dad took in a small, mostly-white dog that someone couldn't take with them into their new apartment. Even though he already has three dogs, he said he took in the new one because that's what my Mom would've done. When he told me the dog's name I nearly dropped the phone: Delilah. It's another Miranda-to-Mom connection that makes me smile.

Ted we have another thing in common besides Ran! It was my mother as well that instilled in me my love for music. There was always music in our house. I have little doubt that if my Mom were here, she'd love Ran as much as I do! Thanks for sharing your story!

Ted, that was a beautiful story, and you are to be commended for sharing the memories that you will cherish forever with all of us. I too am an animal lover, as your past contacts with me and Buckeye will attest, and I too recently losted a loved one....my other dog, Tutu. When the memories we have for a loved one, be it human or animal, are as strong as the ones that we both have, it is like they are never truly gone from us. They are in a better place, but they are never far away.......

Ted what an amazing story, my heart goes out to you for the loss of your mom. She would be so proud of you for making that donation to the Humane Society. I've seen the fiesty side of you...this is the first time I've seen the compassionate side of you. By reading this story about what a phenominal woman your mom was I can see where that compassion came from. This story touched my heart and thank you for sharing this with everyone.

Ted.....

That's a beautiful story! I know that we spoke before about the passing of your Mom and how much you deeply cared for her. Although it has a sad undertone it's actually very sweet and it's nice to see that you are able to move beyond the loss to those parts of you that retain those wonderful memories!

Thanks to you and your influence if been having Miranda blast through my house for a few months now. And you find it amusing....that now my Mother has become I big fan of hers too!

I was lucky enough to see Miranda at the Stampede this month! It was amazing show and one that I will not soon forget! And I have to tell you......I though about you alot that night! and every time I did I smiled!

Ted,
Losing a parent is one of the hardest things, specially a loving and caring mom like you had. That is an amazing story about your mom and the dog, that dog could tell that she would take care of him, that she would protect him.
Keep strong Ted :)

Hey Ted,

Those are some beautiful memories about your mother. You two seemed close. And your parents seem to have been two perfect souls intertwined!

I know what its like to lose a family member. I lost my sister 10 years ago. But the pain hasn't subsided fully. I miss her a lot, and think about her everytime times are tough for me. And I find confort in knowing that she's around me, always. And that we'll be together again someday.

Sending you some love, take care!

We all should feel proud of you Ted, It takes alot of courage to write something about a loved one that has passed away! I too feel the pain you have suffered! I lost my mother in Febuary this year, I still cannot forget all the fond memorys I have of her whether it was one of telling me how to save money-I'm still working on that one, lol. Or the great ones that keep you smiling for rest of the day! Anytime you want to talk about it let me know!

Great Story Ted!

Im sorry to hear about the loss of your mother, but your story was more uplifting then bringing me down. You pointed out all her best characteristics instead of bringing your readers sorrow. Its amazing and maybe a blessing that your mother and Ran have a lot in common. With knowing all that, I think you find comfort in knowing it also.

Take care!

Hey there.... I wanted to thank you for your support on my Brickfish entries... I read your profile and I am sorry to hear about your mom. I love Miranda Lambert... Her songs are about real life... We have a little in common... My dad passed away about a year ago. One of his favorite past-times in addition to his dogs... was listening to a great radio personality named Delilah. I would love to think they your mom and my dad are chit chatting up there about their dogs, music and the strength in their children... Great story. Loree (guinessgirl413)

Ted I cannot tell you enough how important the influence of music has been in my life,(I owe that to my mother who got it from her mother) your story touched my heart, because I connected with it so strongly. When all is said and done, and all the material things are gone, I too will always hold the memories of things shared that are intangible yet forever. Your connection to Ran seems very synergistic in nature. There's your sign! Momma's watchin' over you. Not to mention Daddy ;) Good Luck Ted!

Although I don't know you well, my interest was peaked over hearing my Mom (GBT) and my sister (hisbabygirl) talking about your story. Having read it, I too am touched and can totally relate to it. My grandmother and uncle both passed many years ago, but I will always treasure the gift of music that they instilled in me! It's a gift beyond measure. I too wish Ran's music was around as I was growing up and wish I could have shared it with them, and like your Mom, my grandmother possessed all of those traits. I take comfort in knowing they watch over me, and I am sure your Mom and Dad are proudly watching over you. Keep the faith!

I'd like to thank all of the people who took the time to read and rate my story. And for listening to me when I asked (begged) for you to make only one account. This whole contest is about sharing stories of how Miranda and her music have touched your lives. It's not really about winning. If you think it is, then maybe you missed the boat. Again, thanks to all who took the time! Hopefully some of you will become real Ran Fans!
