Play On
Carrie Underwood
Arista Nashville
*1/2 (one-and-a-half stars)

Carrie Underwood's path to superstardom has been cut down the middle with savvy, razor-sharp precision. She's a good girl who occasionally goes bad, a Barbie doll with sporadic Bratz tendencies.

Previous albums have balanced pristine ballads (Jesus, Take the Wheel, So Small, Just a Dream) with fiery rave-ups (Before He Cheats, Last Name). Those discs were far from perfect, but they managed to showcase some flickers of real personality.

Play On, online and in stores Tuesday, could (and should) have been an artistic turning point. Underwood is now a bonafide country queen, and the title allows her the liberty to take real chances. That's what ultimately makes this disc, her third, so disappointing.

She seems oddly detached from much of the material here -- not dirty enough during the uptempos and not able to conjure the drama needed for the breakup songs. Yes, she sounds terrific. And to be fair, it's not like the material allows her much wiggle room. Everything stays safely in the narrow confines of country radio.

That's fine for a post-Idol newbie. But Underwood should not only be raising the bar, she should be setting it. Play On will likely sell millions of copies and spawn several hit singles. But it feels lazy and uninspired, especially in the wake of exciting musical ventures from both Idol (Kelly Clarkson, Brooke White, Adam Lambert) and country (Miranda Lambert, Taylor Swift) peers.

1000% agree. That's basically what I said in the other Carrie thread. I'm so disappointed with this album. The only word that comes to mind to describe is 'bland.' Confused I'm really trying to like it, but I just can't make it through all of each song. It doesn't sound country at all.. Sorry, I'm not bashing, I love Carrie, this is just my opinion. Smile

Jen you're right! I've read several comments other Carrie fans have left on sources, they seem pretty disapointed as far as her new album goes.

Agreed. She's by far one of the best vocalists I've ever heard, but I'm afraid this album is gonna be a disappointment. Even though I'm sure it will sell millions. Hopefully for the next one she will wake up and smell the roses and put some initiative into the 4th album.

I agree with the whole thing! Carrie has definitely taken a step back. I think having the pop writers working with her really killed her! Confused It doesn't live up to her other two albums. But her vocals are great.

I totally agree. Her best album is Carnival Ride. Her vocals on the album is great but the material is flat. I like the album but it isn't like with Ran's that I am going to listen to it non-stop.

She shouldn't of been writing with pop writers because this isn't country.

My favorites are Cowboy Casanova because it is just a fun song. I also like Quitter I love how it is broken up lyrically. I love Change and Temporary Home they made me cry. I also love What Can I Say it is a lovely duet. Also like Unapologize I like the fact that it is taking back the fact that she said sorry for saying I love you. Undo it is a fun little song I like.

I thought Mama's Song was just to mushy. Songs Like This was too trying to be Miranda IMO.

Overall, I like the cd but not her best work.

Appreciate the posting, Josh!! But why, all of a sudden, are Carrie and Miranda mentioned in every single article together again. I thought there was no comparison...Just thinkin'! Confused

Maybe because their albums came out so close together and they both are have nominations for Female Vocalist Of The Year. At least that is what I think why they are mentioned together because they are like night and day.

Personally, I think Carrie should of released her cd before Ran's because after listening to that straight for more than a month the cd is a little bit of a let down.

Like I said before I think Carrie is obsessed with Ran. I think she is a Ran Fan. She even went out and bought her cd instead of getting it for free.
